The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is seeking an Assistant Curator, First Nations Art to support the First Nations Art curatorial department, with a range of administrative and curatorial duties and the development and management of the NGV Collection.

This position is only open to applicants that identify as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent or Pacific and International First Nations Peoples. The National Gallery of Victoria considers that being of First Nations descent is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under s 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic).

ABOUT THE POSITION:

You will be responsible for undertaking administrative duties to support the First Nations Art curatorial department operations including maintaining accurate records, budgets, schedules and contacts, drafting correspondence, processing administration, and responding to inquiries

Other key responsibilities include:

  • In consultation with the Senior Curator, support the implementation of the NGV Collections Strategy, acquisitions policy and procedures, and complete associated supporting documentation and collections management processes, such as cataloguing.
  • Contribute to the planning, research, development and coordination of displays and exhibitions in accordance with departmental requirements. Participate as an active member of cross-departmental projects and manage specific projects, as required.
  • Contribute to relevant Curatorial and Audience Engagement initiatives, such as NGV publications and audience engagement and learning programs, including research, writing and presentations.

To be successful, you will have demonstrated knowledge of local and global First Nations art, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, as well as Pacific Islander and International First Nations art more broadly, supplemented with a related tertiary qualification. You will have direct or transferrable experience in curatorial practice, exhibition and project management, publishing or research within a related setting.

Previous experience in administering or assisting with exhibitions, public programs or collections and a sound knowledge of the creative industries is desirable.

Demonstrated experience using collection management databases, such as Vernon is highly desirable.
