The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is seeking a Conservator of Textiles to provide specialist services for the care and conservation of textiles in the NGV Collection.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

You will be responsible for undertaking routine and complex conservation treatments on the wide range of textile items in the collection of the NGV, according to the highest technical and ethical standards with treatments ranging from minor repairs to lengthy and complex processes. Other key responsibilities include:

  • Undertaking technical examinations, writing condition reports and devising treatment proposals for fashion and textiles items in the collection.
  • Adapting established and standard treatments to the needs of individual and unique items and providing safe and innovative display options.
  • Discussing technical findings, proposals and progress during treatments with the Senior Conservator of Textiles, curators and other conservators.
  • Where required, undertaking research into the treatment of fashion and textiles, including the study of items (in the NGV and other collections), gallery records and archival and library material, as well as researching techniques to improve treatments and preventative care.
  • Providing authoritative advice to NGV staff regarding preservation, display, storage, handling, methods of manufacture and construction of fashion and textiles items. Initiating, implementing and coordinating projects associated with the storage of fashion and textiles.

To be successful, you will have successfully attained a tertiary degree in conservation, specialising in the treatment of textiles or equivalent experience coupled with significant experience in the complex treatment of unique and irreplaceable textiles. You have knowledge of the structure, history, technology, deterioration and treatment of textiles including recent research and publications in these areas. You have experience in the analysis of component materials of textiles and their accessories and evidence of ability to adapt established conservation treatments to individual items.

Professional membership of AICCM would be highly regarded.
